A group of 5 of the lads arrived on Thursday night so they could enjoy the sights and sounds of the beautiful Chinese city. The Bund is a favorite place for tourists and the lads took in all the city had to offer.
With the full squad assembling on Friday night, we took the chance to fully bond as a team and go over game plans and team analysis data provided by the coach at a little place called Bar Rouge. With input from all players the guys felt very confident about the match the next day.
After an hour bus ride to the Shanghai Cricket Club, the lads warmed up and skipper Nigel Shroff won the toss and elected to bat. Unfortunately wickets tumbled early and the innings battled to gain any momentum until Nigel & Roy Lamsam put on a solid partnership, Nigel top scoring against his former club with 59 & Roy adding 30 to help us post a competitive 183/6 from 40 overs. Unfortunately this score couldn't be defended despite the brilliant and heroic wicket keeping of Phil McNicholas, who battled on bravely despite an injured hand & not keeping for 5 years.
With the team despondent and struggling for answers to the loss, the coach called an emergency meeting to lift spirits and discuss our short comings at a venue called M1nt, a popular Shanghai venue which is well known for its ability to reinvigorate the tired traveller. The unit immediately responded and with confidence renewed, I felt a better performance in the T20 match the next day was assured. Special mention must go to new KCC member "Walter" who provided the team with some good technical points about throwing techniques and sandwich making.
The team meeting seemed to work as the KCC lads came out blazing. Led by a brilliant Dylan Deering innings of 94 not out, KCC amassed 181/3. This seemed to be a winning score but unfortunately with the opposition at 100/6, the heavens opened and the match was abandoned.
All in all it was a fantastic trip and special thanks must go to Nigel Shroff who organized everything from the venue to the tourist guides and buses. I look forward to this trip being a regular interport between 2 great clubs.
